Description of what happened to us on August 10, 2010, 2 am, in Spain
On the 10th of August 2010 at approx. 2am, I was driving on the highway EX-A1 towards Portugal on km 46, only 135 km away from reaching our destination of the BOOM-Festival. I was with two friends (Johan Gjestland & Iselin Bruff) in the cabin of my Mercedes Benz, when out of the middle of nowhere; a truck drove without breaking, honking, or signaling at full speed (*perhaps over the speed limit) into the rear end of our bus that got thrown into the air and off the road, while picking up speed by another 30 to 40 km (*guessing) that was instantly added to our driving speed.
Strangely enough, I did not see the truck approaching in the rear-view mirrors, which is weird, because the road behind me was a long and visible downhill road. Perhaps the lights of the truck beamed into the sky? Perhaps he came from another dimension, but apparently, the truck driver who’s name was: Angel de la Rasilla did not see us at all. Strangely enough, at the last highway stop, which was only 40 driving minutes away, i noticed how nice and bright the red back-lights were on our bus! There were no signs of the truck breaking and the tire lines and oil signs on the road proof that I drove on the right side of the road also. The place of impact where he run into us on the highway is full with oil due to the fact that the oil spilled immediately from the heavy impact, but there were absolutely no signs on the highway of the truck breaking prior to impact with us. There are NO tire-marks until after impact of when you can see tire marks from the truck all the way until he came to a still stand, approximately 200 meters after impact with us. Pictures of the bus in the rear end show a direct impact and no side-ways impact. Behind the back door of the bus is another enforced thick steel wall that protected us from the truck driving deeper into our car
With sounds of metal squeaking and wood contorting, the car flew approximately 50 meters in the air, before landing on the front wheels at approximately 90 - 100 km / hour. I was fully conscious during this and witnessed it first hand. I did not black out. On the road, you can see 2 front wheel tire marks on the side of the road (*see pictures), but no 4 tire marks as they are in the back of the car, showing that the truck lifted a 3 ton car up into the air for 50 meters.
We were heading straight towards a rock wall! With analyst’s calculations of the break-lines and the flying distance and the impact power, it is possible to calculate the speed of the truck. I, as the driver had no control of the vehicle, since none of it was on the ground for the first part between truck impact and stonewall impact. Therefore, there were no chances to break or steer the vehicle. I realized that someone must have hit us from the back. I had no other explanation of what just happened to us. Right before impact with the rock-wall, the bus rolled over and I chanted OM NAMO SHIVAYA. The last thing I remember was that I thought this might be the last moment of my life. What followed was pure terror! The engine turned up full throttle and the diesel tank started leaking all over us three helpless individuals. Propane leaked from the back of the car. The propane tank that was in the rear-end of the bus, in the exact place the truck collided with us. Gas-pipes deliver gas to the stove and fridge inside the camping vehicle that we drove. The propane tank was full and it was ruptured on impact! Lucky we did not explode. My wife; Iselin screamed, because she thought we are going to catch on fire any second. I, with broken ribs pulled out my 100 kg heavy friend Johan, who regained consciousness. Then I could rescue Iselin. The truck driver came running towards us and he called the ambulance. The foggy icy gas mixed with the grass that was inside the drivers cabin. This made for a surreal scene. Thankfully, the door was open and we could climb out of the vehicle. At the local hospital where the Ambulances took us too, we were examined and x-rayed. No life-threatening emergencies were detected and NO BLOOD, not one drop. I have broken ribs and Iselin a broken leg. That is it. Johan was completely unharmed, but we were bruised all over. I almost broke my foot, my knees and most likely my spine in my neck, which I still have not x-rayed. But we are alive and I feel reborn and having been given a second chance, a second life. This has been an amazing experience which is teaching me much and nonetheless, in two days, we are still going to the Festival to enjoy ourselves with very limited capacity to dance.
by the way; the place of where the accident happened is called malpartida, which translates into bad game. the name of the county is extremadura, which translates into; it carries far and it lasts.
